The SINful Quest II
The Dim Sum chapter!!
Before that, let me rant about my week for a bit. It's not officially easter holiday yet, but i've set my mind set to "it's the holiday" for a few days, accidentally and not accidentally =P the wind is like crazy.. i might be blown away. stay in... stay in... don't go out. sleep whole day, skip lectures, skip seminar. that's life :D my customers are getting interesting. i worked two full nights this week, and i wore my glasses instead of my contact lenses. wonder if that's the reason that my customers are "interesting". you know, lucky charm kinda thing =P i had an theater actor who is quite charming, a very act cool male customer which spoken little and just nodded to what i say, then some drunken customers that let me inhaled alcohol (not forgetting to mention they interupted my conversation with that beautiful actor.. grr..), and all the prank calls *fume*.
The next stop on our quest to fatten ourselves up during the CHRISTMAS holidays (long ago.. sad case) we went to 皇城酒楼 Huang Cheng Jiu Lou, in Manchester ChinaTown.
We spent hours there just because we did not want to walk around with our bags and shopping bags (as couldn't fit all those Zara's, FCUK's, Miss Selfridges' etc into our bags :S) after checking out from Travelodge. Plus, the place gave 30% off for students!!!!!! 30% weeeiii~ TIGA PULUH PERCENT, tau?! This is the most generous offer i've ever seen for students in a restaurant. The offer is only available at a certain time during the day. Just let's say the time is very convenient for filling in the gap of checking out from hotel to the next train. Sweet~
鲜虾腐皮卷 (xian xia fu pi juan)
fresh prawns in toufu skin. i hope i got the name right. i've forgotten what this is. but out of everything that's on the menu, this is the only thing with the "toufu skin" in its name. and since they are wrapped in toufu skin, so i guess they are what i hope they are. i could be so misleading at times. lolx.
酥炸奶黄饱 (su zha nai huang bao)
they are bun. deep fried bun. it seems like just normal bun, but when u open it up, the core is not normal. haha. i don't have the noun to name the core. but imagine the texture of the crabmeat sticks, just that it's made of bread. dip and take it with the condensed milk, it's just lovely, nevertheless, they are just normal bread. available in steamed version too!
红豆沙饼 (hong dou sa bing)
ok. i, again, do not have a proper name for this dish. it's not on their printed menu, but saw its name sticking on the window. it's red bean paste wrapped in crepe.
萝白糕 (lo bai gao) Loh Bak Gou
carrot cake made from grated white carrot with added bits of shrimp and onion, then pan fry them. i've only heard of them on TVB drama before and finally gotten the chance to taste them =P
皮蛋瘦肉粥 (pi dan sou rou zhou) Pai Dan Shou Yuk Zhuk
Porridge/ Congee with century eggs and lean meat. my favourite! By the way, century eggs are not actually century old lah. they are just weeks/months old lah.
香滑椰汁糕 (xiang hua ye zhi gao) Ye Chap Gou
coconut milk pudding like dessert. they are soooo smooth. of course in malaysia can get the cheaper version from the market, wrapped with the pandan leaves. actually, can get the cheaper version of everything back home.
菜肉煎锅贴 (cai rou jian guo tie) Gor Tip
potsticker dumpling. seriously. i only learnt of the english name for this version of dumpling when doing this post. 锅=pot. 贴=stick. so, they are called potsticker. laugh out loud!! they are pan-fried, thus the brownish bottom.
迷你珍珠鸡 (mi ni zheng zhu ji) Chan Zhu Kai
glutinuous rice wrapped in lotus leaves, the pearly version. ok, proper name would be pearly wrap, i think. but the long name would be self explanatory. not quite actually. it's named "pearly" because all the meat are diced into tiny cubes like pearls. hehe. different from 糯米鸡 (nuo mi ji) Loh Mai Kai in which the meat are not diced.
蟹黄蒸烧卖 (xie huang zheng sao mai) Siu My
steamed dumpling, made from minced pork and prawn, and topped with a little bit of crab eggs.
虾饺皇 (xia jiao huang) Har Gao
this is another type of dumpling. chinese really like dumpling hor. created sooo many version of them. for this type, it is wrapped in a translucent skin, and in the skin is prawn! i love prawns, especially those fresh and steamed ones. tasted sooo sweet.
荔湾艇仔粥 (li wan ting zai zhou) Teng Zhai Zhuk
this is also the first time i tasted this type of porridge. it has seafood in it, also some nuts. the name literally means 荔枝湾 li ji wan (name of a place which i have no idea where) boat porridge, because the person who created this combination of porridge sold them on a boat, and people ate them on the boat. interesting eh.
鸳鸯滑肠粉 (yuan yang hua zhang fen) Chiong Fan
char siu and prawn wrapped in rice noodle sheets. remember to pour the very watery dark gravy on it which is the heart of the whole dish, i think. with out the gravy, the whole thing is tasteless except for the sweetness of the prawns.
香酥炸鲜鱿 xiang su zha xian you
fried calamari. nothing special. just fried.
鲜虾炸云吞 (xian xia zha yun tun) Wan tan
another type of dumpling. in this one is prawn (again) wrapped in wonton skin.
All those with a pot of tea is......?
8 pounds per person, and there was four in the congregate.
Seriously, that was a lot of food.
They have 4 different tiers of prices: small, medium, large and special which i can't remembers the numbers for, but are affordable. wei. 8 pounds per person for all those. judge the price yourself.
The place is clean. the toilet is spacious. they made the name of everything in their Dim Sum menu 5 characters. and the 30% off the total bill. not a bad place to be and kill time and eat and be merry. Love it.
