The SINful Quest II

The Dim Sum chapter!!

Before that, let me rant about my week for a bit. It's not officially easter holiday yet, but i've set my mind set to "it's the holiday" for a few days, accidentally and not accidentally =P the wind is like crazy.. i might be blown away. stay in... stay in... don't go out. sleep whole day, skip lectures, skip seminar. that's life :D my customers are getting interesting. i worked two full nights this week, and i wore my glasses instead of my contact lenses. wonder if that's the reason that my customers are "interesting". you know, lucky charm kinda thing =P i had an theater actor who is quite charming, a very act cool male customer which spoken little and just nodded to what i say, then some drunken customers that let me inhaled alcohol (not forgetting to mention they interupted my conversation with that beautiful actor.. grr..), and all the prank calls *fume*.

The next stop on our quest to fatten ourselves up during the CHRISTMAS holidays (long ago.. sad case) we went to 皇城酒楼 Huang Cheng Jiu Lou, in Manchester ChinaTown.

We spent hours there just because we did not want to walk around with our bags and shopping bags (as couldn't fit all those Zara's, FCUK's, Miss Selfridges' etc into our bags :S) after checking out from Travelodge. Plus, the place gave 30% off for students!!!!!! 30% weeeiii~ TIGA PULUH PERCENT, tau?! This is the most generous offer i've ever seen for students in a restaurant. The offer is only available at a certain time during the day. Just let's say the time is very convenient for filling in the gap of checking out from hotel to the next train. Sweet~

鲜虾腐皮卷 (xian xia fu pi juan)
fresh prawns in toufu skin. i hope i got the name right. i've forgotten what this is. but out of everything that's on the menu, this is the only thing with the "toufu skin" in its name. and since they are wrapped in toufu skin, so i guess they are what i hope they are. i could be so misleading at times. lolx.

酥炸奶黄饱 (su zha nai huang bao)
they are bun. deep fried bun. it seems like just normal bun, but when u open it up, the core is not normal. haha. i don't have the noun to name the core. but imagine the texture of the crabmeat sticks, just that it's made of bread. dip and take it with the condensed milk, it's just lovely, nevertheless, they are just normal bread. available in steamed version too!

红豆沙饼 (hong dou sa bing)
ok. i, again, do not have a proper name for this dish. it's not on their printed menu, but saw its name sticking on the window. it's red bean paste wrapped in crepe.

萝白糕 (lo bai gao) Loh Bak Gou
carrot cake made from grated white carrot with added bits of shrimp and onion, then pan fry them. i've only heard of them on TVB drama before and finally gotten the chance to taste them =P

皮蛋瘦肉粥 (pi dan sou rou zhou) Pai Dan Shou Yuk Zhuk
Porridge/ Congee with century eggs and lean meat. my favourite! By the way, century eggs are not actually century old lah. they are just weeks/months old lah.

香滑椰汁糕 (xiang hua ye zhi gao) Ye Chap Gou
coconut milk pudding like dessert. they are soooo smooth. of course in malaysia can get the cheaper version from the market, wrapped with the pandan leaves. actually, can get the cheaper version of everything back home.

菜肉煎锅贴 (cai rou jian guo tie) Gor Tip
potsticker dumpling. seriously. i only learnt of the english name for this version of dumpling when doing this post. 锅=pot. 贴=stick. so, they are called potsticker. laugh out loud!! they are pan-fried, thus the brownish bottom.

迷你珍珠鸡 (mi ni zheng zhu ji) Chan Zhu Kai
glutinuous rice wrapped in lotus leaves, the pearly version. ok, proper name would be pearly wrap, i think. but the long name would be self explanatory. not quite actually. it's named "pearly" because all the meat are diced into tiny cubes like pearls. hehe. different from 糯米鸡 (nuo mi ji) Loh Mai Kai in which the meat are not diced.

蟹黄蒸烧卖 (xie huang zheng sao mai) Siu My
steamed dumpling, made from minced pork and prawn, and topped with a little bit of crab eggs.

虾饺皇 (xia jiao huang) Har Gao
this is another type of dumpling. chinese really like dumpling hor. created sooo many version of them. for this type, it is wrapped in a translucent skin, and in the skin is prawn! i love prawns, especially those fresh and steamed ones. tasted sooo sweet.

荔湾艇仔粥 (li wan ting zai zhou) Teng Zhai Zhuk
this is also the first time i tasted this type of porridge. it has seafood in it, also some nuts. the name literally means 荔枝湾 li ji wan (name of a place which i have no idea where) boat porridge, because the person who created this combination of porridge sold them on a boat, and people ate them on the boat. interesting eh.

鸳鸯滑肠粉 (yuan yang hua zhang fen) Chiong Fan
char siu and prawn wrapped in rice noodle sheets. remember to pour the very watery dark gravy on it which is the heart of the whole dish, i think. with out the gravy, the whole thing is tasteless except for the sweetness of the prawns.

香酥炸鲜鱿 xiang su zha xian you
fried calamari. nothing special. just fried.

鲜虾炸云吞 (xian xia zha yun tun) Wan tan
another type of dumpling. in this one is prawn (again) wrapped in wonton skin.

All those with a pot of tea is......?

8 pounds per person, and there was four in the congregate.
Seriously, that was a lot of food.

They have 4 different tiers of prices: small, medium, large and special which i can't remembers the numbers for, but are affordable. wei. 8 pounds per person for all those. judge the price yourself.

The place is clean. the toilet is spacious. they made the name of everything in their Dim Sum menu 5 characters. and the 30% off the total bill. not a bad place to be and kill time and eat and be merry. Love it.

The SINful Quest I

In Manchester...

We were walking around with our huge~ bags before the check-in time, then we saw this fast food chain which seems interesting..

Funny we were indecisive on what to have.. Bella Italia.. Pizza Express to name a few.. then Rice caught our eyes because of their menu with things like Malaysian Laksa, Singapore Beehoon and stuff like those.. but I regretted it to the max. Seriously.

Rice is a fastfood outlet. Food on the go, more like it. Their cartons are like those I see on American dramas those chinese takeaways. Haha.

Everything is disposable, dining in or out. Pity on our Mother Nature. Especially those plastic utensils. P.L.A.S.T.I.C. need I say further?

Putting the environmentalist aside, the food...
...

Salt aren't free, are they? Can they cut down on the salt and let the consumer pay less on the price? I think the whole chunck of money that I paid went to the salt.

Will not step in any of Rice outlets ever again. Nevertheless, the American chinese takeaway cartons are soooo cute!lolx!

Oh.. Rice outlets are only available in Manchester.

That was lunch. Such a bad start for our trip. &%$#$@!

Moving on.

Dinner!

Ok. We heard of this place from Rob. So, we checked it out, and it was absolutely great! One of the nicest Chinese restaurants that I have ever been to. It is seriously something to rave about!

But before we managed to get to the place...
A: Excuse me. Do you know where is Tian Hu?
B: Tian Hu? Do you mean Tai Hu?
-.-|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Who the heck told us the place was call Tian Hu?!
It is
TAI HU
TAI HU
TAI HU
太湖
Luckily we asked a very nice Canto aunty who is very familiar with the places. Not only she showed us the right direction, she knew which restaurant we are looking for and corrected us. Tian Hu, Tai Hu. They don't even sounds anything close. But, on second thought, they actually do sound similar. Maybe not similar similar, but can easily replace one with another, if you know what I mean.

The place was seriously packed when we were there, and I believe it is packed everyday. We had to leave our names and waited at their bar area to be called on the public announcement system! It was hilarious to hear people's name to be called out and be served.

Seriously, their business is that good. No wonder the aunty knew which restaurant we were actually looking for.

We sat down and we were immediately served soup!

The bowl was so big. 4 of us could get a second serving out of that.

I don't know what are they all called or what they actually are! This young lass only knows how to eat. Anyway, the first one was bean curd with prawn, the second one was pork intestine with the salty preserved veg, the third one was crab meat with egg paste (if there's such a thing) served chilled, and the last one was pork with honey sauce or something.

This lass is hopeless on doing reviews.

Their service was fast. They are soooo good at it. Used tables were cleared in seconds and would be ready to take in another bunch of people in seconds. Fast.Efficient. It's like everyone has a role to play and they play it so well and so systematically that it doesn't give you any time to look at what the previous customers had had. No that you'ld have the chance to anyway as every dish would have been cleared to the tummies.

The food was absolutely worth every penny.

All four dishes, with the big bowl of soup, boiled rice (not sure whether it was free flow or not), a plate of fruits, and a pot of chinese tea costed each of us 10.50pounds. Do your maths. British standard, that was way below average. Don't make me go all the way in rationalising the price. Take it when I say that's cheap. lolx! I'm a poor student, you know.

Our dinner was interrupted three times THREE TIMES at least because of people's birthdays. Conclusion: People like to celebrate their birthday there. Also show how popular that restaurant is. The lights were dimmed all of a sudden and birthday songs played and the waitress/waiter would bring out a cake from the kitchen. And being polite, we took part by clapping. Ok.. only me took part la. And of course, the clap was only a small no sound kinda clap la. Yan dei san yat guan o meh si ar

Crap. I'm hungry now. Someone bring me back there, please.

I am…

… FWWEEEEEEEEEE!!

No more coursework. NO more coursework. No more COURSEWORK!!! All the assignments for this year are all over and done with!!

Celebrate!

How?

Chilling with loads and loads of snacks. Muahahahaha.

The past few weeks had been awful. Report after report after report… probably have to repeat that 500 times to make my point haha. Seriously, there was not any life left. Everything was sucked out of me. MSN was not on. Well it was on, just was set to appear offline. Had not been talking to loads of people. Even Bear had not been able to reach me. But he had been able to reach Bubu. Haa… my boyfriend is talking to other girls more than talking to me.

My snack drawer… seriously that the thing that keep me alive. It was full, but it’s not now. I have never let my supply run this low before. All that was left was one bar of mars, one piece of McVities and one packet of short bread biscuits. It was always, and I do mean, always filled up to the max. Seeing it only with three little things left in there, it just seems… not right. Haha. Imagine how much food I keep in my room. It’s ok. I have refilled it right after I handed in my last piece of coursework this morning. Muahahahaha. Am now on the mission to finish everything off again.

Holland and Barrett nuts are quite nice hor.

Have really been off these few weeks. My dramas on Youtube. Sob sobs. They are now all piled up. And hey, I didn’t even know that MDG2 is already on and it’s already on its 6th episode. WAaaaaa… I’m so slow. It’s ok too. Am now on working to finish everything that was left behind. Only slept 3 hours last night to finish that last piece of coursework. Going to sleep less again tonight to finish those drama. Muahahahaha. Yea lah.. as if I could live without my beauty sleep. I’m still half dead now since last night even though I had slept the whole afternoon. Seriously whole afternoon. Afternoon nap cannot, CANNOT, replace proper night sleep.

These assignments are really not fun at all. I’ve really changed the way I do things now. Last time, I would always get my reports or whatever done at least 2 days before the due date, so that I can keep reviewing them in at least those two days, do some twitching, make them perfect. Now, I finish my work only an hour AN HOUR before the due time. Due time is 4pm. My work is done at 3pm. Gila… seriously gila. I seriously don’t like it this way. I seriously don’t know what made me do thing this way. Chloe said it’s because I started working part time wor. Seriously ar?

I’m sleepy already. See.. afternoon nap seriously cannot replace the night sleep.

We’ll see if I would manage to do all the food post from my Christmas trip next. Haha. It's easter already -.-
